Membrane Bioreactor System

Overview
A membrane bioreactor combines biological wastewater treatment with a membrane separation stage. The biological process breaks down suitable biodegradable material, while the membrane retains suspended solids within the treatment system.
System arrangement
The concept can include equalisation, biological reaction, membrane filtration and a treated water buffer. Instrumentation supports checks on operating conditions and membrane loading. Cleaning provisions and access for membrane maintenance form part of the process layout.
Typical applications
The approach may be considered for compatible industrial or mixed wastewater streams where a compact solids separation arrangement is useful. Pretreatment is needed when incoming solids, oils or chemical conditions could interfere with the process.
Planning and service
A design review should establish representative flow and water quality data, seasonal variation and the intended treated water destination. Membrane selection, cleaning arrangements and any reuse targets require testing against the actual wastewater.
