Activated Carbon Filter

Activated Carbon Filter concept illustration

Overview

An activated carbon filter uses a porous adsorption medium to capture selected organic compounds and odorous substances from an air stream. It is often considered for lower concentration exhausts or as a polishing stage after another treatment process.

System arrangement

The concept includes a media housing, distribution section and access panels for inspection and replacement. Even airflow distribution helps make effective use of the media bed. The operating plan should define pressure monitoring and a method for identifying breakthrough.

Typical applications

Potential applications include laboratory ventilation, production enclosure extraction and selected odour control duties. Carbon type and bed arrangement depend on the compounds present, humidity, temperature and required service interval.

Planning and service

The maintenance plan should address dust loading, media change procedures and appropriate handling of spent carbon. Adsorption performance and fire risk need to be assessed for the actual gas composition before specifying an installation.

Key features

  • Replaceable adsorption media
  • Compact modular arrangement
  • Accessible inspection points
